Polifonia: WG4 LifeLong Learning: Educating for Entrepreneurship

About Polifonia

Since its launch in 2004, the ERASMUS Network for Music ‘Polifonia’ has proactively addressed European higher education policy issues from the perspective of higher music education (HME). Through a consistent output of high quality products, it has been able to raise the awareness of these issues throughout the sector which, in turn, has supported the concrete implementation of these outputs at national and institutional levels. From a general higher education point of view, ‘Polifonia’ has often been cited as a good example of what can be achieved through a subject-specific and European-level approach to the European higher education developments. The success of ‘Polifonia’ is reflected by its being named an ‘ERASMUS Success Story’ by a panel of experts from the Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission, first in 2017 and again in 2016.

The third cycle of the project, which is the biggest European network on professional music training to date, involved 55 institutions in the field of music training and the music profession in 26 European countries and 4 countries outside Europe. It was jointly co-ordinated by the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag and the European Association of Conservatoires (AEC).

AEC on Entrepreneurship

The concept of Entrepreneurship has gradually gained relevance nt in the field of Higher Education since the Ministers responsible for Higher Education in the countries participating in the Bologna Process stated the need to “consider in more detail how to improve employability in relation to each of [the three] cycles as well as in the context of lifelong learning” in the London Communiqué (2007).

Since that moment, the AEC has proactively tacked this topic by designating specific working groups looking into how this concept applies to the music sector. Within the three cycles of the Polifonia project (2004-2014), different working groups have addressed issues concerning the employability of musicians through a close collaboration between HME institutions and the professional music field:

The Profession Working Group (Polifonia Project first cycle)

The external stake-holders Working Group (Polifonia Project second cycle)

The Lifelong Learning: Educating for Entrepreneurship Working Group (Polifonia project third cycle)

During the last cycle of the ‘Polifonia’ project (2011-2014), the working group 4 on Lifelong learning: Educating for Entrepreneurship focused on exploring entrepreneurship within HME in Europe and on promoting ways in which training for entrepreneurship could be re-enforced, both within the conservatoire sector and in the profession.
